Great to meet you! I'm
In my early 40s, I noticed my hair was starting to fall out, I was gaining more weight than ever, and my skin was so dry. I felt cold when I really shouldn't be, and my energy level was nonexistent. Being a registered nurse and knowing my family history, I asked my doctor to draw labs, and he confirmed I had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
If you aren't familiar with this autoimmune disease, the simple description would be the body sees the thyroid as a foreign body and proceeds to attack it like it would an infection. While I was prescribed Synthroid, there is no mediation to fix the autoimmune piece. You can only manage the symptoms through lifestyle changes.
In my mid 40s, I noticed the onset of perimenopause, but now realize it probably started in my 30s after having GYN surgery. This was a time marked by unpredictable changes in my body and emotions. This added another layer of complexity to my wellness journey. The constant weight changes, energy dips, and various symptoms of menopause have certainly tested my resilience. It was a frustrating and confusing time, and I found myself searching for answers, desperate for solutions that would help me regain control and feel like myself again.
In 2019, I noticed an increase in my Hashimoto's flares, so I started to do more research. I found that focusing on my gut health created a positive approach to managing both my Hashimoto's disease and menopause symptoms. Having a balanced and healthy gut microbiome plays a crucial role in reducing inflammation, enhancing nutrient absorption, and supporting overall immune function. For those with Hashimoto’s, a well-functioning gut can help minimize autoimmune flare-ups and improve thyroid health by focusing on underlying issues such as leaky gut syndrome, which can exacerbate thyroid dysfunction. By incorporating probiotics, fiber-rich foods, and reducing inflammatory foods, I've experienced fewer symptoms and better overall health.
Similarly, gut health significantly impacts menopause symptoms. A healthy gut aids in hormone metabolism and balance, helping to alleviate common menopausal issues like hot flashes and mood swings. Improved digestion and nutrient absorption support overall wellness, which can help manage weight fluctuations and energy levels during this transitional phase. Prioritizing gut health has thus been a key factor in achieving greater stability and comfort through both Hashimoto's and menopause.
