Tony Robbins is a self made business man, billionaire, and renown author of six internationally bestselling books including The Time Of Your Life, “a 10-day program designed to help you create more time for what truly matters to you, using scientifically-proven strategies that will free you from endless to-do lists and instead put your focus on purposeful action that drives real, consistent results.”
Below are the effective time management skills that everybody needs to have, according to “the nation’s #1 life and business strategist.”
1. Align your actions with your core values
“You can not have a plan for your day, until you have a plan for your life.” – Tony Robbins.
How often do you stop to check that what you’re doing on a day to day basis is getting you closer to your life’s mission and goals?
It doesn’t matter how many items you check off your to-do list, if you’re not working in line with a concrete plan that will help you to accomplish what’s most important to you. Always ensure that you’re spending time on what truly matters, as that is how you will achieve success and fulfillment.
“Aligning your actions with your core values is a question of having clarity on what these values are, and [then] designate the time needed to reach your goal.”
2. Minimize distractions
After you’ve figured out exactly what you want to achieve and allocated the time necessary, make sure that you have a system in place to guard against distractions.
Whether it’s your daily obligations, interruption from outside sources or internal doubts and fears, figure out what they are and learn to deal with them, so as to free up mental space and enable you to zero in and focus on your most important goals.
As an example, block off time to work on your goals during which you’ll turn off all email and social media notifications, so that you can focus on the task at hand.
If your most prominent distractions are internal in nature — like fear or lack of motivation, you can get an accountability partner, as studies have shown that working on your goals with a friend will increase your chances of success.
3. Learn to say no
Another important element of effective time management is the willingness to say no to requests that you simply won’t have time to fulfill.
In order to stay within your schedule and prevent burnout, it’s essential that you learn to prioritize your goals above other people’s, and be honest about what you will or will not be able to do for them.
Additionally, try to cut back on instant answers. Instead of committing to something or turning it down right away, ask for more time to think about it and confirm if you can really fit it into your schedule without stretching yourself too thin.
4. Understand how priorities really work
“If you have an endless list of priorities, it’s the same as having no priorities.”
Effective time management requires both systems in place, and a mental shift from the busy mentality to focus on the few important tasks that will help you move forward in life and reach your goals.
5. Outsource
Sometimes, to be able to close the gap between where you are and where you want to be, you might need to get a little outside help. Consider delegating the less important but still necessary tasks to somebody else.
Outsourcing doesn’t have to mean spending resources you don’t have either. You could trade skills with your friends or networks, doing something you’re already great at in exchange for a little help completing a task that’s consuming too much of your time.
Achieving your goals doesn’t have to seem so far off or impossible, as long as you are willing to clarify what you truly want, dedicate the time necessary to implement, and work at it one day at a time!
